New York performance artist/chanteuse Joey Arias has been added to the spring lineup at the Contemporary Arts Center (CACNO).

Arias, a veteran of the New York underground scene, has had a varied career as a Billie Holiday "song interpreter," the star of Cirque du Soleil's Las Vegas production Zumanity, and a string of film appearances.

CACNO's description of his show there says, "In celebration of Billie Holiday’s 100th birthday, New York cabaret and drag icon Joey Arias channels the trailblazing vocalist and jazz legend in a spectacle of old-Hollywood Big Band glamour."

The New York Times once said of Arias, “Makes Lady Gaga look like Greta Van Susteren.”

For my money, Arias was part of one of the greatest musical performances ever on Saturday Night Live: a remarkable nine-minute, three-song 1979 set by David Bowie backed by Arias and the late Klaus Nomi.

Tickets to the CACNO show are $35 and are on sale now.
