Mudbug Brewery, LLC has become the 13th production brewery in Louisiana. Brewery partners Leith Adams, Brance Lloyd and Peter Leichty have announced they've achieved the final step to become a working brewery — Louisiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission (ATC) approval.

The brewery has been constructed from the ground up for more than a year, but the brewery has been a dream for much longer than that. Childhood friends Adams and Lloyd have been planning since early 2011 when they began seeking financing, creating branding, and getting feedback on Adams' King Cake Ale at local festivals. Leichty came in to support the pair when he heard an investment pitch and was impressed by their dedication and innovation.

Mudbug's 4,384 Facebook followers have been along for the ride every step of the way, from posts about recipes, pictures of the concrete slab being poured, and watching the creation of the the brewery and the tap room take form.

The brewery is 7,000 square feet, with 1,500 square feet dedicated to the tap room and the rest for brewing operations. Mudbug will have a 64-barrel capacity.

Earlier this week, Adams brewed a batch of the brewery's flagship beer, King Cake Ale (brewed with lactose, cinnamon, and vanilla bean to evoke the flavor of traditional king cake). Mudbug's beer will be distributed by Crescent Crown in the Houma/Thibodeaux market as well as other local markets. Currently, Adams is brewing Pelican Pilsner, and he intends to release a different seasonal beer every month in addition to the flagship beers, which include the above as well as Cafe Au Lait Coffee Milk Stout and Intracoastal IPA.

In a 2013 interview, Lloyd said, "We wanted something that would be marketable and Louisiana-based, because that’s something we wanted to focus on — being a Louisiana brewery with local flavors.” According to Adams, he just wants to make good beer. And now, after a long wait, he's able to do so.
