August beer events

Although August is usually a slow month in New Orleans, the craft beer scene is busy this summer. Here are several beer events happening in the next week.

Wednesday features the release of Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp series. Sierra Nevada holds “beer camps” at its Chico, California, facility year-round, and professional and amateur brewers brew beer using its pilot system. Every year, the brewery picks its favorites to brew on a larger scale and distribute. This year, Sierra Nevada upped the profile of the Beer Camp series release by holding large-scale events around the country and promoted the professional brewers that collaborated at Beer Camp.

The Avenue Pub (1732 St Charles Ave., (504) 586-9243; @AvenuePubNOLA) is the only bar in Louisiana that has all 12 Beer Camp beers, including collaborations with Ballast Point, Firestone Walker, Russian River and 3 Floyds. The Beer Camp kegs will be tapped at 4 p.m. Other Louisiana establishments may have access to one or two different Beer Camp kegs this week.

IPA Day was started by beer writer and craft-brewing champion Ashley Routson (aka The Beer Wench) in 2010. It’s held the first Thursday of August, which means Aug. 7 this year. The Avenue Pub is tapping several special IPAs for the occasion, including Gnarly Barley double dry-hopped Radical Rye, Bayou Teche Hop'elousas, Founders' Dissenter IPL (India pale lager), Stone Unapologetic IPA, Sierra Nevada Single Hop IPA and Southern Prohibition Sinister Minister.

The Bulldog Mid-City (5135 Canal Blvd., 504-488-4180; @bulldog_midcity) is offering several IPAs to celebrate the day, including Gnarly Barley Radical Rye, Yalobusha Miss-iss-IPA, Stone Collective Distortion, Founders' Devil Dancer triple IPA, Terrapin Rye 3 and Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Hop. Both Bulldogs (Mid-City and Uptown) will offer at least two different IPA flights.

On Friday, Bin 428 (2801 Magazine St., 504-269-6200; @winebin428) offers a free tasting of rose wines and IPAs. The event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and includes IPAs from Founders, SweetWater, Anchor and Southern Prohibition.

St. James Cheese Company (5004 Prytania St., 504-899-4737; @stjamescheese) is holding two events this month that will pair beer and food. On Aug. 13, Dan Stein (beer expert and owner of Stein’s Market & Deli) and Derek Lintern (brewer at NOLA Brewing) will present a variety of Southern beers to taste with St. James’ cheeses and meats. On Aug. 19, chocolate enters the mix, when Stein and Lintern move to NOLA Brewing (3001 Tchoupitoulas St., 504-896-9996; @nolabrewing) with St. James cheese and chocolate from Cheryl Scripter of Bittersweet Confections (725 Magazine St., (504) 523-2626; @BittersweetNOLA). There may be samples of a specially brewed beer available to pair with the chocolate. Visit St James’ website for more information and to make a reservation.
