Tonight is the NBA draft. The New Orleans Pelicans currently do not own a 2014 first round pick (turned into #10 overall) as that was sent to the Philadelphia 76'ers in a deal that brought the Pelicans point guard Jrue Holiday. However, being without a pick does not mean Pelicans General Manager Dell Demps is sitting on his hands.

ESPN reported last night that the Pelicans acquired center Omer Asik for a 2015 first round pick (cap protected). The Rockets are also providing the Pels $1.5 million in cash as part of the deal. Asik played in 20 games last season with the Houston Rockets, while backing up All-Star center Dwight Howard. He battled some injuries last season and averaged 5.8 points & 7.9 rebounds per game.

On paper, it's a fine trade for the Pelicans — however, it's not that easy. Because of the NBA's salary cap and how the Pelicans fit underneath that cap either Ryan Anderson, Eric Gordon or Austin Rivers must be moved to make room for the team to absorb Asik's salary. Michael McNamara of Bourbon Street Shots has a fantastic piece explaining in detail how this works for the Pelicans.

Since Demps joined the Hornets/Pelicans in 2010, he's made a total of 12 trades, not including the Asik deal which becomes official after July 10. What else will "Dealing Dell" have for us tonight? We will see.
