Del Fuego Taqueria officially open for business

Calling all taco and mezcal lovers: Del Fuego Taqueria is officially open in its swanky home at 4518 Magazine Street.

The hotly anticipated spot for high-end Mexican fare welcomed a swarm of hungry guests on Tuesday's opening night, all ready to sample from a diverse, flavorful menu.

The colorful, wood-heavy decor (with Día de Muertos-style art and skull motifs throughout) is anchored by ample outdoor seating on both sides of the dining room, with festive hanging baskets creating a relaxed, south of the border vibe that allows diners to forget any traffic flowing through on the nearby street.The bar's menu of 100+ tequila and mezcal offerings is robust but not intimidating, with descriptions of each drink detailed enough for even first time enthusiasts to find their way. The liquors are organized into three distinct pages — blanco tequila, reposado tequila, and a final section which includes both anejo tequila and mezcal — with a separate selection of cocktails, beer, wine, and agua frescas for those not quite ready to tackle the spoils of the agave plant.

The good, the bad, and the ugly cocktail

The good, the bad, and the ugly is a particularly solid starter cocktail, with smoky mezcal, tamarind agua fresca, housemade triple sec, and a spicy ancho salt rim making it a strong accompaniment to any dish.

The menu is full of modern updates on classics taqueria favorites, including rich, roasted duck enchiladas, perfectly seasoned vegan cactus tacos, and a bolillo sandwich (basically, a torta) which features crusty, oval-shaped white bread with any number of meat and vegetable fillings.

The restaurant opens for dinner at 5:00 p.m. each day, with hopes to expand to lunch and dinner hours in the near future.
