Summer’s here, and this heat calls for some thirst-quenching beer. Here are a few items of note from the New Orleans brew world:
• Abita and NOLA Brewing have released their summer seasonals. Abita’s Seersucker Summer Pils is a clean-drinking and refreshing pilsner style. NOLA Brewing’s Hurricane Saison has undergone a makeover in its sixth summer of production; the entire batch has been dry-hopped with Galaxy hops to complement the saison’s fruity yeast with a juicy, tropical fruit hop aroma and flavor.
• Chafunkta Brewing has been able to increase its capacity by teaming up with Mississippi brewery Lazy Magnolia, and has subsequently debuted Kingfish Cream Ale (a lighter beer excellent for summer), the first of Chafunkta’s beers to be bottled and sold in six packs.
• Parish Brewing is holding its first beer dinner ever at Red Fish Grill on Bourbon Street. This “Sugarcane Beer Dinner” will feature all of Parish’s year round beers including South Coast Amber, Dr. Hoptagon, and Farmhouse IPA, paired with a local seafood-focused menu. The dinner will be on Wednesday, June 25 at 6:30 p.m., and the cost is $70 (plus tax and tip).
• Up-and-coming New Orleans breweries are making progress. Courtyard Brewing has finished with its in-ground plumbing and floor drainage and the brewing equipment is starting to arrive. Owners Scott Wood and Lindsay Hellwig are awaiting the go-ahead so they can start pouring concrete, and are planning to build out “the most interesting bathrooms of any brewery in the country.” Follow them on Facebook
• Second Line Brewing is working with the Small Business Administration and the Louisiana Small Business Development Center to finalize its business plan and financing. The brewery has received approval from the Louisiana Department of Revenue, and is working with the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control and the city of New Orleans.
