Morning, glory: first look at Humble Bagel’s gentle opening

There’s something to be said for being understated, especially when it comes to breakfast joints.

When Artz Bagels shuttered for good earlier this year, it was disappointing to lose a go-to spot for quality bagels. It was a bit of a relief, though, to never have to venture into the store’s neon wonderland of greens and pinks ever again.

The peach fuzz and robin’s egg blue color scheme of Freret Street’s much-anticipated Humble Bagel (open through the weekend with limited hours) shows a lot of promise as a place where early risers can eat fresh, warm bagels without feeling like they’ve being dropped into a morning cartoon show.

Opening quietly just days before the onslaught of Freret Street Festival, Humble Bagel’s small-but-mighty menu — including a salt bagel special and fresh strawberry cream cheese — and courteous staff have created an easy-going, welcoming atmosphere that is a natural fit for the neighborhood.
