With baseball season kicking off this week, it's a great time to look into local area athletes that are with some Major League Baseball (MLB) team or are currently free agents.
Adams is a 2nd baseman from New Orleans that attended Jesuit High School. He was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2006 MLB draft by the Baltimore Orioles. Adams made his MLB debut with Baltimore five years later in 2011 with Baltimore. He currently is part of the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league organization.
Diamond is a pitcher from Metairie and went to Rummel High School. After graduating from Rummel, Thomas went on to pitch locally for UNO. From there, he was drafted #10 overall in the 2004 MLB draft by the Texas Rangers. Thomas made his MLB debut in August 2010 for the Chicago Cubs. Diamond has played for the Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins. He is currently a free agent.
Fontenot is a second baseman from Slidell and was drafted in the 21st round in the 1999 MLB draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. He opted to attend LSU instead of heading to play professionally. In his freshman year for the Tigers, Fontenot was named National Freshman of the Year after hitting .353 with 17 home runs and 64 RBI. In 2000, he helped LSU capture a College World Series.
In 2001, Fontenot was drafted in the first round, 19th overall, by the Baltimore Orioles. Four year later, he made his MLB debut with the Chicago Cubs and stayed with the Cubs for a few years before being traded to the San Francisco Giants. It was with the Giants in 2010, that he won a World Series ring.
Fontenot has played for the Baltimore Orioles (minor league organization), Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays & he currently in the minor leagues of the Washington Nationals organization.
Gaudin is a right hand pitcher that hails from Metairie and attended Crescent City Baptist High School. He was drafted in the 34th round of the 2001 MLB draft. Gaudin made his MLB debut in August 2003 for the Tampa Bay Rays. He's played for the Rays, Toronto Blue Jays, Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, Washington Nationals, Miami Marlins, San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies.
Gaudin was last with the Phillies organization after signing a minor league contract in January 2014. He was released approximately a month later when he failed a physical. He's currently a free agent.
Johnny is a second baseman from Metairie and attended high school at Jesuit. After starring at Jesuit, Johnny stayed near Metairie and played at UNO. He was drafted in the second round of the 2008 draft by the Kansas City Royals. He made his MLB debut in August 2011 for the Royals. Last week, Giavotella was optioned to the Omaha Royals, the AAA affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
Manzella is a shortstop from Chalmette. He attended Archbishop Hannan High School and went on to playing shortstop in college for Tulane. Manzella was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2005 MLB draft by the Houston Astros. He made his MLB debut in September 2009 for the Houston Astro and has played for the Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies and Toronto Blue Jays. Manzella is currently in the Arizona Diamondbacks minor league system.
Paul is an outfielder from Slidell. He was drafted in the fourth round in the 2003 MLB draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He made his MLB debut in May 2009 for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He's played for the Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals, Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles. He is currently in the Baltimore Orioles minor league system.
