The UpStairs Lounge Fire screens at Chalmette Movies

The 40th anniversary of the June 24, 1973 fire at the Up Stairs Lounge was marked by a memorial, a jazz funeral and other events. Filmmaker Royd Anderson released his documentary about the fire, and there will be two free screenings of the film at Chalmette Movies.

The fire resulted in the deaths of 32 people. Police never arrested or charged anyone with setting the fire, though a can of lighter fluid was found at the scene. A suspect had been in a fight in the bar hours before the blaze, and he was questioned but not arrested. He committed suicide a year after the fire.

Anderson's film includes photos from the scene and new interviews with witnesses and relatives of victims of the fire.

The 27-minute film screens 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 7 and 8 p.m. Thursday, July 11. Anderson will answer questions after both screenings.

Anderson also made documentaries about the 1982 Pan Am flight that crashed in Kenner and the 1976 Luling Ferry disaster.
