What’s the future for Tujague’s?

Murmurs in the French Quarter have it that the venerable Tujague’s Restaurant on Decatur Street could be closing soon after more than a century and a half in business,

Tujague's longtime owner and operator Steven Latter died in February at age 64.

Asked today about the rumors and the restaurant’s future, his son, Mark Latter, responded that there “are too many variables” to say anything definitive about the restaurant or its future, declining to elaborate further.

Tujague’s ranks as the city’s second-oldest restaurant, behind Antoine’s. It was opened in 1856 by a Frenchman named Guillaume Tujague and long served as a breakfast and lunch spot for people working the nearby docks and French Market. More recently, the restaurant has been known for its old-fashioned table d'hôte Creole menu, the vintage ambiance of its dining rooms and bar and its signature brisket.

Steven Latter had operated the restaurant since 1982, according to his obituary in the Times Picayune.
