Japanese-style fast food at Kobe Teriyaki

Kobe Teriyaki (7912 Earhart Blvd., 504-862-5555) recently opened in a small spot off South Carrollton Avenue, serving a short menu of casual Japanese dishes. It’s a counter service operation where orders come out fast and nothing on the menu breaks the $10 mark.

That’s a tip off that you shouldn’t come looking for Japan’s prized Kobe beef here. But the teriyaki part of the restaurant’s name does accurately indicate its specialty. The kitchen mixes together heaving rice bowls with sheets of thin-sliced beef or strips of charbroiled chicken and sauces them with the savory/sweet mix of a classic teriyaki. Vegetables, sesame seeds and slivers of pickled ginger finish these bowls.

Kobe Teriyaki is the first restaurant venture for Jetty Hui and his partners. Hui says they had previously worked in restaurants on the West Coast and since relocating to New Orleans they missed the Asian-style fast food joints they used to patronize.

“We love New Orleans but thought we could add a niche that we didn’t find here,” he says.

They have cooked up a little crossover too with Japanese-style po-boys. They’re made on traditional po-boy loaves but are filled with teriyaki chicken or beef with wasabi mayonnaise. Vegetable tempura, salads, teriyaki chicken wings and a few sushi rolls round out the menu.

While the standard fare here is mildly seasoned, Hui advises that the kitchen is supplied with a potent array of chile peppers and can seriously boost the heat on request.

“We can go from New Orleans spicy to Thai spicy, so we can get your lips burning if that’s what you want,” he says

There are only soft drinks to wash that down, but the restaurant does shares a roof with a daiquiri shop (look for the vintage Jeep staged out front).

Kobe Teriyaki serves lunch and early dinner (closing at 7:30 p.m.) from Monday through Saturday.
