New Orleanian Athena Frangos sings on American Idol Thursday

Athena Frangos tries out for American Idol.

"Anthena" Frangos sings and dances regularly in Bustout Burlesque, a monthly burlesque show at the House of Blues, in which she goes by the stage name Athena. Thursday, her American Idol audition in Baton Rouge will be broadcast on the show (7 p.m. on FOX8 WVUE). The season is just starting, but before the first episode aired, there was considerable talk about squabbling between celebrity judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban.

Frangos was one of thousands of would be contestants who showed up to open auditions for the program at the New Orleans Arena, and she was one of an estimated 50 who made it to a final audition in front of the celebrity judges in Baton Rouge in October 2012. At Bustout, she sings many songs by Etta James and Ruth Brown. But she was given a Carole King song to sing for the panel.

Frangos was born in Greece and raised in Kenner. She studied ballet for many years, and at 15 years old she sang with a touring Latin band, Fuerza Latina. More recently, she has appeared on MTV's My Super Sweet Sixteen and O Music Awards and on HBO's Treme.

She next appears in Bustout Burlesque on Feb. 23.
