The Southern Food & Beverage Museum is expected to move to its new home in Central City sometime later this year, and when it does it will be home to Purloo, a new Southern-style restaurant and bar with chef Ryan Hughes at the helm. Until then, Hughes is running a weekly pop-up at a bed & breakfast nearby in the Lower Garden District, with the first one scheduled for this Wednesday, Jan. 23.
Hughes says he’ll continue the pop-up each Wednesday evening at Creole Gardens Guesthouse at 1415 Prytania St. Each edition will feature a five-course tasting menu focusing on a different genre of Southern cuisine. First up is Lowcountry cuisine (see the menu below) while next week, on Jan. 30, it’s the cooking of the Mississippi delta.
Seating for each dinner is limited to 50 people, with reservations required. The evening starts at 6:30 p.m. at the patio bar with cocktails and wine before dinner at 7 p.m. The prix fixe dinner costs $48, or $78 with a wine pairing.
The Lowcountry choice is a nod to Hughes’ formal training, which he completed at Johnson & Wales University in Charleston, S.C. He later had a long tenure as executive chef at Café Degas and a short one at Johnny V’s.
Purloo is being planned as an integral part of the new home for the Southern Food & Beverage Museum, which is redeveloping a property at 1504 O.C. Haley Blvd. Hughes sums up his style for Purloo as “American Southern cuisine with a classical French accent.”
