Tonight: Dan Deacon

Dan Deacon

Electronic music composer Dan Deacon trained equally in conservatories and basement parties. His masterclasses in exuberance and 21st century pop craftsmanship shine on his albums — the free-for-all light show Spiderman of the Rings, to the more focused joy-lasers on Bromst, to the sweeping mission statement America — and especially at his live shows, where he commands a TV dinner tray of glowing devices and his sardine-packed audiences.

On his current tour, Deacon, who typically gets people involved in the performance via human tunnel-building or an anything-goes dance off, will use audience smartphones to enhance the live show — you can download his new, free app (available for iPhone and Android users) to participate. Here's what it does:

this app synchronizes all the phones in the room, turning you and the rest of the audience into the light show and sound system for the concert! This is all done WITHOUT THE USE OF ANY WIFI OR DATA! This revolutionary effect creates a stunning and unique environment. For the first time, having your phone out at a concert is not a jerk move.

When not at a show you can also get the latest tour dates, music, news, and use a custom interactive musical instrument/sequencer.

Deacon performs at 10 p.m. tonight at Maison (508 Frenchmen St.). Admission $15.
