Tonight: Guided By Voices

Prolific indie rock pioneers Guided By Voices casually announced that their headline slot at the 2011 Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, N.C. would be their last — an announcement that seemed to fall on deaf ears, except mine. (I drove from New Orleans to Raleigh in one day, parked, walked to the front of the stage, watched the show, then immediately drove home.)

Obviously, it didn't stick. GBV reunited its "classic lineup," the one responsible for gems like Bee Thousand (1994) and Alien Lanes (1995), for that offbeat festival gig, a proper tour and two studio albums released this year. January's Let's Go Eat The Factory and June's Clown Spots a UFO — both stacked with 21 tracks and recorded in the same sessions — aren't merely a group of guys bringing the band back together and kickin' around some tunes. The drunk-sloppy instant-hit riffs and melodies are still there, as are Robert Pollard's signature eccentric vocals. The band also is expected to release yet another album later this year, Bears For Lunch. Below, a video for Clown's "Keep It In Motion" with comedian Jon Glaser:

Guided By Voices is at One Eyed Jacks at 10 p.m. tonight with Detective. Tickets are $30.
