New Orleans’ own Beasts of the Southern Wild finally opened in New York and Los Angeles last week and was greeted with a national critical response for the ages. Metacritic is probably the most reliable of several sites that compile reviews of popular culture. It translates each review by critics all over the country into numerical scores. As of today, July 2, 2012, nine of the top critics in the country — writing in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Time magazine, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly and other publications — have had their reviews of Beasts translated into a perfect score of 100 on Metacritic. We’ve been reading this site for many years, and we have never seen that kind of praise for a new film.
You can see the full list of Beasts Metacritic scores here, complete with summaries and links to full reviews (including a few negative ones). We read most of them over the weekend, and we can tell you that many try to get across the idea that Beasts is not just “best of the year” best, but “best of the decade” best. The dozens of New Orleanians who worked on the film all share in this extraordinary success. There are many accolades still to come.
Beasts of the Southern Wild opens locally on Wednesday, July 4, at the Prytania Theatre, Canal Place and the Elmwood Palace.
