Much of the dismantling of the Times-Picayune’s daily print operation is already in motion, but people who rely on “their” daily newspaper to act as watchdog and local news purveyor aren’t ready to give up yet.
There’s a 7 not 3 rally scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 18, at N’tini’s Steak and Martinis (2891 Hwy. 190, Mandeville, 985-626-5566; www.ntinis.com). N’tini’s owner Mark Benfatti organized the rally to allow Northshore residents to voice their opinions about the T-P’s plans to reduce the print schedule to three days a week this fall. In an email announcing the event, Benfatti, a member of the St. Tammany Parish Chamber of Commerce Executive Board and the Louisiana Restaurant Association, wrote:
“We all deserve daily access to news coverage in and around the greater New Orleans area. It is a way for all of us to communicate and stay connected together. … Not only does it hurt me as a small business owner who needs access to daily advertising, but I believe it also hurts our community as a whole.”
Benfatti has created an online petition supporting a daily Times-Picayune and a blog inviting comments from the public.
