Roddy White thinks "Penn state is wrong" to fire a coach who neglected to tell police that a child was sexually abused

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White sent the tweets pictured above after news reports indicated Pennsylvania State University football head coach Joe Paterno was dismissed by the school's board of trustees in relation to the sordid child sex abuse accusations leveled one of Paterno's former assistant coaches, Jerry Sandusky.

It can be safely assumed that either White is an idiot, doesn't care about child sex abuse, or hasn't read the grand jury report implicating Sandusky of abusing children since the early 1990s. Considering White has three kids of his own, we can presumably rule out the second scenario. White's past would indicate that the first assumption is the most obvious. But, in all honesty, our money is on him being an idiot AND that he doesn't read grand jury reports.

To be completely fair, Paterno has done a lot for his school. But all the lobbying for library funds in the world doesn't make up for all Paterno didn't do when presented with an eyewitness account of one of his former assistants and long-time friend sexually assaulting a young boy in the Penn State football team's showers. From the grand jury report:

"Joseph V. Paterno testified to receiving the graduate assistant's report at his home on a Saturday morning. Paterno testified that the graduate assistant was very upset. Paterno called Tim Curly ... Penn State Athletic Director and Paterno's immediate superior, to his home the very next day, a Sunday, and reported to him that the graduate assistant had seen Jerry Sandusky in the Lasch Building showers fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a young boy."

Paterno didn't call the police — as is currently required by Pennsylvania State Law and is obvious to anyone with even the vaguest moral compass — and apparently conducted no follow-up investigation (the grand jury report states that Paterno didn't participate in any of the subsequent meetings between the graduate student and Penn State officials about the incident). That incident occurred in 2002. It wasn't until six years later that a coach alerted the police of Sandusky's misconduct. It just so happened to have been a wrestling coach who caught Sandusky in strange situations with a different boy.

White is joined by the local news media covering the event, a few hundred (hopefully-not-hopelessly) misguided Penn State students and this dumb-ass in thinking that Paterno, by virtue of winning a few hundred football games and still coaching despite being very old, should be excused for not doing more when confronted with the information that a child was sexually abused in his football team's showers (really, that point can't be stressed enough).

To Roddy White (and really anyone who's ignoring the horror the alleged victims and their families have gone through and are thinking instead of Paterno's legacy and/or how Penn State will play on Saturday) on behalf of the world: Shut up and stop being an idiot.
