Digging in with Saints greats, past and present

There’s no love lost between the Saints and the Chicago Bears, that persistent NFC rival coming to the Dome on Sunday. But even as the game approaches, it’s a safe bet at least one contingent from Illinois has a soft spot for Saints quarterback Drew Brees these days.

Illinois is the home base of Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches, a nationwide sub chain, and today is the opening day for a Metairie location franchised here by Brees himself. Jimmy John’s has two other Louisiana franchises, both in Baton Rouge, but the company could see more expansion around the New Orleans area. Here’s what Brees said about it during an interview last year with Entrepreneur magazine:

We just retained the franchise rights for Jimmy John's here in New Orleans, and we'll be opening up our first store here very soon, and, hopefully, there will be many more of those to come.

Brees is hardly the only member of Who Dat royalty with to get into the food business lately.

Rickey Jackson, the great linebacker, the menace to all opposing quarterbacks and the Saints’ one-and-only representative in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, has a brand of sausage in the market.

This Saturday, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Jackson is scheduled to be at the Piccadilly Restaurant location in Jefferson (2609 Jefferson Hwy., Jefferson, 834-2695) to sign autographs as the lunch crowd samples jambalaya made with his smoked sausage.

And former Saints receiver Joe Horn has a food product out there now too.

Horn, who left New Orleans in 2007 for a single season with division archrival Atlanta before retiring, now has a product line called Joe Horn’s Bayou 87 BBQ Sauce. Horn’s Web site mentions an “early bird special.” No word yet on Dirty Bird specials.
