Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne announced today the signing of a cooperative endeavor agreement between the Louisiana State Museum and The Roots of Music, the free after-school music education program for at-risk students in the New Orleans area. Program directors were unsure if it could continue on at the location.

The agreement extends the current contract to provide the music program rehearsal space from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m Mondays through Fridays. The Roots of Music also will provide future programming at the Old U.S. Mint, including live performances and recording sessions.

Up next on the Roots calendar (if you just missed the Marching Crusaders parade today at Jazz Fest): From 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. May 20, the program hosts the Marching to New Orleans gala, featuring local musicians, celebrity chefs, silent and live auctions, and performances by the Roots of Music band. Tickets are $150 general admission, and $200 for patron party guests. Get tickets here.
