Pictures: Six-alarm fire in Garden District

Sometime after 9 p.m. Friday night, I smelled something burning and noticed that the air had gotten hazy around my apartment on Thalia St. between Magazine and Camp. Standing on my balcony, I could see smoke in the distance. A few seconds later, a quick burst of flame shot into the sky. I grabbed my camera, ran out the door and hauled ass on my bike, following the smoke.

When I finally got there, on the corner of Prytania and Josephine Streets — over 10 blocks away — I saw a remarkable blaze that had begun to engulf the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. At least three or four fire trucks had already arrived on the scene and more were on the way. There were burning embers filling the sky and a tower of smoke could be seen billowing towards downtown. I took my camera and snapped as may pictures as I could.

A little while later Gambit photography guru Jonathan Bachman helped me edit down the roughly 175 pictures I took. Gathered here are a small collection of those pictures.
