Disc golf has come a long way since it was introduced to the masses via "The Summer of George" as "frolf", and now New Orleans can lay claim to its very own 18-hole disc golf course in City Park.

Fans of the game will surely cherish the moment as anyone with a flying disc habit had to trek out to Lafreniere Park in Metairie if they wanted to play (not that Lafreniere's 26-hole beauty isn't worth the drive, it just adds up at the pump).

I've played the course a few times already and it certainly offers a slew of challenges for even the most experienced player, with tee-boxes surrounded by palm trees and holes perched precariously near water hazards, it all makes for a fun afternoon. (Check out more pictures of the course layout here).

There will be a tournament and a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the course's opening. Registration starts at 9 a.m. with the ribbon-cutting taking place at 10:30. Hit the jump for all the details.
