Baton Rouge's ABC affiliate WBRZ has reported Ron Zappe, the namesake and creator of the Louisiana potato chip company Zapp's, has died. He was 67.

Zapp's, from its "little chippery in Gramercy," has made its popular chips since 1985 in the former Faucheux Chevrolet. Zappe's unique kettle-cooked potato chip recipe spawned flavors like Cajun dill, voodoo gumbo, mesquite BBQ, sour cream and Creole onion, and the all-powerful Cajun crawtater.

Last weekend, as folks prepared for Memorial Day barbecues and crawfish boils, cthere were no doubt ountless bags grabbed from grocery store shelves. There's just something about that font, and the black-and-white schoolbook vibe of the cracked pepper and sea salt flavor, or the candy-stripe look on others. And of course, the taste — the perfect crunch alongside a po-boy or an ice-cold Abita. I know some who put pickles on regular flavor Zapp's, or stand near the snack table at parties and hover over the coveted spicy Creole tomato flavor chips. It's party food. It's survival food. It's comfort food. It's perfect. Thank you, Ron. May heaven be filled with infinite crawtator dust from which to lick from your fingers.
