This has been put together quickly and with a lot of love. Can't imagine a better way to spend Sunday afternoon in New Orleans than a fundraiser for wetland restoration and immediate help for our coastal seafood gatherers and their families who have been so badly hurt -- hell, let's just say it: screwed over -- by BP's ongoing ecological nightmare in the Gulf.
Who's playing? Lenny Kravitz, Allen Toussaint, Mos Def, Ani DiFranco, Voice of the Wetlands Allstars (featuring Tab Benoit, Dr. John, Cyril Neville, George Porter Jr., Waylon Thibodeaux, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Johnny Sansone, and Johnny Vidacovich), Zachary Richard, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Ivan Nevilles Dumpstaphunk, Soul Rebels Brass Band, Irvin Mayfield's Playhouse Review, Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers, Jeremy Davenport, Rebirth Brass Band, MyNameIsJohnMichael and more to be added. WWOZ will be broadcasting live from the concert and raising more money with a donation hotline.
It's this Sunday, May 16, from noon-10 pm (rain or shine) at Mardi Gras World River City (that's the one on the East Bank near the Convention Center). Tickets are $50 and can be purchased here. Follow GulfAid on Twitter at @GulfAid and keep checking the WWOZ website for more details as they're announced. We'll let you know if we hear of more artists.
