The Crescent City Farmers Market is a pretty festive place in general, but give the market organizers a holiday theme to celebrate and look out.
The latest high jinx includes a dog parade and pageant to mark Bastille Day tomorrow, July 14, at the Uptown market (200 Broadway). French poodles and French bulldogs will be on show, as a panel of judges picks winners in such subjective categories as most chic, sweetest, "craziest," the best French kisser (these are dogs, remember) and the catch-all "Frenchiest." Expect to see lots of dogs in French-themed costumes. Registration starts at 9 a.m., with the parade at 9:15 a.m. and awards at 9:45 a.m. Gypsy Swing provides tunes.
The "Frenchiness" continues with the market's Green Plate Special, the weekly offering of ready-to-eat dishes from visiting local chefs. Allison Vines-Rushing of MiLa will prepare a French-inspired menu including grilled tuna on ratatouille, farm potato vichyssoise with smoked oysters, smoked fish and lima bean dips and blueberry bread pudding with creme anglaise.
