Tasting Supports New Youth Culinary Program

A new café and caterer aimed at helping teens and young adults get their lives on track is taking shape in Mid-City, and tomorrow the local wine shop Swirl will host a party to raise funds for the program and give patrons a taste of its cooking.

Liberty's Kitchen is a nonprofit that plans to open at 422 South Broad St. in April as a coffee shop and café serving breakfast and lunch, as well as a catering service for events, community centers and schools.  The group's executive director is Janet Davas, formerly the director of development for Café Reconcile, a Central City café and youth training program with similar goals.

Liberty's Kitchen is intended for people age 16 to 20 and will use a combination of hands-on food service training, classroom instruction and individual case management to build confidence, social skills and marketable job experience. The training is followed by job placement services or help returning to school.

This Tuesday, March 10, Swirl hosts a party featuring samples of six dishes from Liberty’s Kitchen executive chef Reggie Davis and the group's catering service, plus six wines courtesy of Republic National Distributing Company.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and costs $20 per person. Space is limited, so call Swirl at 304-0635 to reserve a spot.
