Strange Christmas Song Of The Day #14: A Digression

After posting a baker's dozen Christmas songs this season, it came to my attention that I, your Christmas blogger (on this third night of Hanukkah) am actually Jewish. A jaunt around the Internet revealed, though, that even though my people have spawned some of the best all-around songwriters of all time (Leiber & Stoller, George & Ira Gershwin, Gene Simmons, Bob Dylan) there are actually no good Hanukkah songs**. Christmas gets James Brown's "Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto" and "Soulful Christmas" - we get Adam Sandler's it's-funny-once warbling. So instead, I give you the above: a Tony Award-winning Jewish composer's take on Kwanzaa, as aired last week on D.L. Hughley's CNN program. And I ask - when do we get our "Santa Claus Go Straight To The (Warsaw) Ghetto"?*

** Actually, the Woody Guthrie Hanukkah album by the Klezmatics isn't half bad.

* Please don't be offended. It's Christmas.
