In the first spring following the federal levee failures, a group of Mid-City neighbors took time away from rebuilding their ruined homes and damaged small businesses to create a new music and art festival called the Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo on Bayou St. John.

The free festival proved a huge success, and doubled in size when it was hosted for a second time this past spring, drawing an estimated 12,000 people, according to

organizers. It remains a grassroots, volunteer-driven effort, and the gears are already turning to get the third edition rolling for Memorial Day weekend 2008.

This Friday, Nov. 2, there will be a Day of the Dead-themed party to raise money to keep the Bayou Boogaloo free and expand its programming.

The fundraiser begins at 7 p.m. at Studio 3, a float-building operation at 3610 Toulouse St., behind the American Can apartment building in Mid-City.

The party will feature Mexican food and drinks, live music and a silent auction for donated goods and services. Look for quesadillas and guacamole from Juan’s Flying Burrito, tamales from Taqueria Guerrero Mexicana and other food. There will be an open bar specializing in mixed rum drinks.

Admission is $40 per person, $75 per couple and $375 to reserve a table for ten. For tickets, call 717-1428 or go to www.thebayouboogaloo.com.
