Shake the Devil Off Screenings

Coinciding with the 165th anniversary of St. Augustine Church, the Ashé Cultural Arts Center this week presents three free screenings of Peter Entell's documentary Shake the Devil Off, each to be followed by a community discussion. Entell's film tells the story of Father Jerome LeDoux, revered former leader of the landmark Treme parish, who was asked in

2006 to retire by Archbishop Alfred Hughes after more than 15 years of spiritual service to New Orleans' Seventh Ward.

As reported by Sarah Andert in the October 2 issue of Gambit Weekly, St. Augustine — which many cite as the birthplace of jazz — has until March 2008 to meet criteria set by the Archdiocese of New Orleans or it faces permanent closure. Shake the Devil Off serves as both a celebration of the church's cultural history and a call to arms for those with the power to help prevent its dissolution. Father LeDoux will be present at the Thursday and Friday screenings. 8:15 p.m. Thursday, 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Ashé Cultural Arts Center, 1712 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., 569-9070;
