Wings of Freedom Tour

Some of the last remaining WWII-era fighter and bomber aircraft will be touching down at the Lakefront Airport. The vintage fleet includes a Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress," legendary for barreling through heavy resistance from enemy fighters and getting the crew home from the mission. One of the last flying Consolidated B-24 Liberators in the world, the same model that flew over Normandy on D-Day and served as Winston Churchill's personal transport aircraft, will be open for visitors to climb aboard. A rare P-51 Mustang aircraft, which earned the nickname "Little Friend" for escorting bomber aircraft, will open its cockpit as well. The Collings Foundation preserves war aircraft for touring history exhibits. Flight experiences on the visiting planes are offered starting at $425. Tickets $12 general admission, $6 children. — Josie A. Scanlan
