Barossa, one of Australia's top wine regions, can trace its viticultural heritage to cuttings imported from France's illustrious Rhone Valley Hermitage appellation from the early 1800s. Both this vintage — aged 12 months in French and American oak — and the recently released 2005 are full-bodied wines of superb depth and richness. In the glass, the 2004 Shiraz offers aromas of black cherries, plums, mocha and oak followed by concentrated flavors of red and black fruit, spice, dark chocolate notes and earth with fine tannins on the finish. Drink now and over the next four to five years. It's good with lamb, beef, game, curry dishes, aged cheddar and chocolate.
