Campbell wants lower phone rates for prisons

comment

When the Louisiana Public Service Commission meets Nov. 15, Commissioner Foster Campbell plans to ask the panel to cut the rate prison telephone providers charge inmates. Saying that the monopoly service charges inmates' friends and families 30 cents per minute (15 times the market rate for calls), Campbell plans to ask the commission for a 25 percent reduction.

"These moves will provide relief to the families of Louisiana's 40,000 inmates in 170 state and local jails," Campbell wrote in a statement, "the highest number of incarcerated people per capita in the world." — Kevin Allman
