The Figure Revisited : Paintings and Drawings by Michael Northuis, Brian Novatny and Monica Zeringue

comment
Every 20 years or so, some new art movement comes along and proclaims that painting -- and by extension, drawing -- is dead. Then, like clockwork, painting and drawing always emerge stronger than ever. For June, Heriard-Cimino features three artists who are highly accomplished in those erstwhile modes of expression. Michael Northuis' work (pictured) melds diverse influences in figures with fantastic hairstyles, unlikely clothing, unusual facial markings or even tribal masks -- in other words, the kinds of characters you sometimes see on certain evenings in Bywater. It's all very psychological, as are the paintings and drawings of Brian Novatny -- whose figures evoke surreal East European fiction -- and Monica Zeringue, whose works are far too psychological to even attempt to discuss here. You'll just have to go see for yourself. -- D. Eric Bookhardt
