Taking It All In

Louisiana's Fairs, Festivals and Special Events

Louisianians love to celebrate life, their culture, food and music, and they love to share the good times with friends, neighbors and strangers from all over in a big way. Any month of the year, in locations stretching from New Orleans to Shreveport, you can find fairs, festivals and special events dedicated to the many -- and sometimes peculiar -- aspects of the diverse cultures and traditions of Louisiana's occupants. To help you explore the possibilities, Gambit Weekly presents this special Fairs & Festivals directory packed with things to do from now until the end of the year.

There is plenty to choose from. Just ask Julie Posner, who compiled the listing of events. She has visited most of them over the past decade and publishes an annual calendar, Huli's Louisiana Festivals and Events (pictured), that gives a day-by-day summary of what's going on around the state. The 2007 edition is her 10th.

"At first I thought I was going to put together a guide book to Louisiana festivals, and I started traveling to all these festivals," she says. "I told someone about my book, and they said, 'I just want a calendar that tells me what I can do when.'"

Posner published 1,500 calendars in 1997 and has since increased her press run to 5,000. The 2007 calendar, which is in full color and includes stories about some of the most popular festivals and interesting traditions, is available from Huli Publishing for $14.95 (discounts are offered for orders of two or more). Order by calling Posner at 488-5993 or visiting the Web site www.louisiana-festivals.com.

Since embarking on her quest to discover all the fairs and festivals in Louisiana, Posner says she has learned a lot about the state's people and their love for traditions. "These festivals are such a community event," she says. "A festival is always a great way to show off a town and get to know it. I think locals put on festivals for themselves. We travel to festivals because of particularly good food or music or because there's something really peculiar there."

They also provide an easy and short vacation packed with fun and new experiences. You can travel to the Orient (sort of) at the Japan Festival in New Orleans, step back in time at the Louisiana Renaissance Festival in Hammond, or gorge yourself at the various food festivals that spotlight the state's affinity for cuisine ranging from smoked meats, gumbo, crawfish, strawberries and even sweet potatoes -- all within a few hours' drive of home. Experience all kinds of music, from swamp pop to jazz to zydeco to reggae, walk along levees lit with bonfires around the Christmas holidays, meet the region's literary figures at the book festival in Baton Rouge or try your hand at egg-knocking during contests in Cottonport and Marksville. All these things and more can be found at the fairs, festivals and special events across the state. Highlight your favorites, pack up some friends and laissez les bons temps rouler!
