On Thursday, April 22, swimmers from Boulder, Colo., will swim a 7- to 10-mile Lake Ponchartrain circuit to raise funds for the restoration of the New Canal Lighthouse, which suffered severe damage from Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. The 6:30 a.m. event, also celebrating the Lake Ponchartrain Basin Foundation's (LBPF) efforts to clean the lake and improve water quality and marine life habitats, runs a course from the lighthouse to Ponchartrain Beach and back. Participating swimmers include Matthew Mosele, an author and communications strategist, and 1984 Olympic Swimming Trials finalist and former USA National Swimming Team member Glynde Mangum.
Plans for the restored lighthouse include an education center and a museum. To make a pledge for each mile, visit the LBPF Web site www.saeourlake.org or call 836-2215.
