Second line for mental health

comment

New Birth Brass Band will lead a 1.8-mile second line walk through Audubon Park Saturday, Oct. 8, to raise funds for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) New Orleans chapter and make people aware of the services available for the mentally ill and the people who care about them. Walkers should meet at Audubon Park Shelter No. 10 (on Magazine Street across from the Audubon Zoo), with registration at 9 a.m. and the walk starting at 10 a.m. There is no registration fee, but donations are recommended.

The New Orleans event is part of NAMIWalks for the Mind of America, with fundraising/awareness walks being held in more than 90 communities nationwide in conjunction with National Mental Illness Awareness Week the first week of October. All funds raised by participants in New Orleans will be used for local programs. Walkers raised $94,000 during the inaugural walk in 2010.
