comment
The Satchmo Summerfest celebrates New Orleans' jazz icon Louis Armstrong with two days of music and the return of past festival events like the 'Satchmo Art Show." After a two-year absence from the roster, the art show opens at the Crescent City Brewhouse on Wednesday. On the weekend, there is live music on three stages at the Louisiana State Museum's Old U.S. Mint from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Performers include Kermit Ruffins (pictured), the Soul Rebels, the Treme Brass Band and the Original Pin Stripe Brass Band. There's also a children's stage featuring Baby Boyz Brass Band, Red Hot Brass Band and Papillion Kid Pirates. The confernece portion of the festival begins Thursday and runs through the weekend inside the Mint. It features movies, music and guest speakers like George Avakian, Michael Cogswell, Yoshio Toyama (the 'Satchmo of Japan") and others who were either close friends of Armstrong or inspired by his work. Free admission. — Shantrell A. Cook
