Dr. Rohan Walvekar, a surgeon and director of clinical research and the Salivary Endoscopy Service at LSU Health Sciences Center, has, for the first time, successfully used a surgical robot and miniature endoscope to remove a 20-millimeter salivary stone and repair the salivary duct of a patient. Stones that large previously required removal of the entire salivary gland. According to Walvekar, the combination of robotics and endoscopic surgery saves the salivary gland while reducing blood loss, scarring and recovery time in the hospital.
