Rhythmic Roots Drum Circle

comment
If you haven't yet made it to one of the St. Augustine's Church drum circles this summer, this is your last chance. The historic Treme place of worship and de facto musical community nexus has been hosting these open percussion jams all summer, and this is the swan song of the series. So far, local musicians invited to steer the music have included members of the Stooges Brass Band, Trouble Nation Mardi Gras Indians, Treme Brass Band, Kirk Joseph and Fi Yi Yi: Spirit of the Mandingo Warrior, Shannon Powell and others. The pros lead, under the direction of Ken "Afro" Williams, but fans are encouraged to bring a percussion instrument and join the rhythm. The spiritual goal behind the event, which is presented by the nonprofit group Mercy Corps, is to use the pulse of the drum as a thread to link different kinds of New Orleans music and the different cultures that make up our city in an organic, spontaneous musical experience. It's intended to use the thump of the drum to create an atmosphere of healing and communion. It's also a rocking good time. Free. -- Alison Fensterstock
