"Until now, Perkins' twisted gospel has mostly echoed around his own increasingly disreputable fringe. But Gov. Jindal just put him in the driver's seat of an entire state's law enforcement. We should all brace for the crash." — Mark Joseph Stern in Slate.com, writing about Gov. Bobby Jindal's appointment of Family Research Council (FRC) head Tony Perkins to the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement. Perkins, a Republican and former state representative who has been largely Washington D.C.-based in recent years, is rumored to be considering a challenge to Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu in 2014.
The left-leaning Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has put the FRC on its list of "hate groups," while Perkins has accused the SPLC of "cultivating [an] atmosphere of hate that resulted in violence through their reckless labeling of pro-family groups."
