Parallel Realities: Recent paintings by Genti Korini

comment
"Some folks like to get away, take a holiday ... I'm taking a Greyhound on the Adriatic line. Yeah, I'm an Albania state of mind ... ." No, that's not how the old song goes, but it might have if Billy Joel was from New Orleans. It's a long story, but thousands of Italian-Americans in this city trace their roots back hundreds of years to Albania, including that country's Honorary Consul, Bret Clesi, and Palma Gallery proprietor Tony Clesi. Palma's current show of abstract paintings by Albanian artist Genti Korini comes to us straight from Tirana, the capital of the tiny nation on the Adriatic Sea. Filled with passionate, slashing strokes that blur the boundaries between architecture and anatomy, between sky and sea, Korini's paintings are as exotic and mysterious as his eternally remote native land. -- D.
