Out of joint

Cantrell family regroups after pot flap

comment

New definition of awkward: Talking to a cop when a joint falls out of your pocket. In Orleans Parish Criminal District Court. When you're an assistant city attorney. And your wife is running for New Orleans City Council.

Attorney Jason Cantrell got cited and released when that exact scenario happened, to the amusement of many — but not to that of his wife LaToya Cantrell, who is running for the District B seat on the council. In a statement that evening, she said she was "angry, embarrassed and disappointed" and added that her husband had resigned from the city payroll — though later in the week it turned out he only was suspended.

The story was reported nationally and in overseas papers. The legal blog Above the Law reprinted it with a note from a local tipster, which read, "As a New Orleans native, I have long suspected that more than 50% of the city — and its employees, specifically — are, at any given time, either stoned, drunk or on a three-hour lunch." — Kevin Allman
