Old Dogg Turns New Tricks

Since first appearing as a featured MC on Dr. Dre's "Nuthin' But a G Thang" from 1992's The Chronic, the eternally baked rapper rose to mega-fame as a pivotal hip-hop pioneer and has now reached a point of pop culture ubiquity — complete with a reality TV show (Snoop Dogg's Father Hood), self-parodying guest spots (Weeds, The L Word), a short-lived comedy series (Doggy Fizzle Televizzle) and cred-destroying cameos on One Life to Live and a Bollywood production titled Singh is Kinng. But that's not to say he's jumped the shark entirely. Snoop says he "retired" from his "pimping" career. Instead, he's spreading '90s West Coast g-funk — an obvious but late-in-the-rap-game merger of Parliament's rhyme-ready beats with a laid-back flow. He's visited retro-synth cheese on the YouTube favorite "Sexual Eruption" (an homage to Roger Troutman, godfather of the auto tune), and now plans to release Malice in Wonderland late this year in conjunction with his late-night talk show Dogg After Dark. Tickets $53.50.
