Lindy Boggs, former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican and one of Louisiana's most effective members of Congress before her overseas posting by President Bill Clinton, is hosting a fundraiser this week to help battered and homeless women in New Orleans.

The benefit for Lindy's Place, a nonprofit transitional home in Uptown for homeless women 18 and older, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. at The Audubon Tea Room, 6500 Magazine St. Donations are $50 per person. Tickets for the patron party, which begins at 6:30 p.m. are $50.

Single women account for one out of every four homeless people in New Orleans, according to the U.S. Conference of Mayors. About 20 women reside at Lindy's Place, 2407 Baronne St. near First Street, and more are served through day programs at the renovated building, a former school. The haven's eight-month community living program includes mental and physical health care, meditations, and "opportunities to pursue meaningful employment and education."
