- La Nuit Comedy Theater boasts bright colors outside and colorful characters inside.
Housed in a bright purple-and-gold building with its original tin ceilings, La Nuit Comedy Theater (5039 Freret St., 899-0336; www.lanuittheater.com) is the only full-time comedy club in New Orleans.
"I wanted something loud and bright," owner Yvonne Landry says. "You can't miss us." The theater seats 65 people, and Landry says it's always packed.
"It feels like a small jazz club," she says. "That's what we do. We perform comedic jazz. We make up funny stuff and perform as an ensemble as we go."
Don't bother to bring your cigarettes; there's no smoking in La Nuit.
"People keep telling me I'm loosing money by being smoke-free, but I don't care," she says. "I think it's the right thing to do." La Nuit has a full-service bar featuring its specialty — the organic fruit mojito.
Landry says the theater's shows are varied, offering a something for everybody from the O, Vengeance Shakespeare and Splatterhouse Theater on Saturday nights to open-mic nights on Fridays. In fact, the Comedy Sportz show on Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. is rated "E" for everyone.
La Nuit is also a comedy conservatory, the only one in the Gulf South. Through it, Landry and La Nuit's staff are teaching the art of improvisation and stand-up comedy to the future comedians of New Orleans.
