Krewe of Oak

Biannually, friends and patrons of the Maple Leaf Bar don costumes, file out of the watering hole and embark on a neighborhood jaunt as the Krewe of OAK, shaking up Carrollton with a patchwork parade and pub-crawl. Karina Mathan, owner of Miss Karina's Mardi Bras and leader of the Bearded Oysters dance troupe, will lead this year's parade titled "From Brassiere to Eternity." The eclectic neighborhood parade traditionally includes five golf cart floats with oversized mounted heads depicting famous locals, like James Booker, and some beloved former Maple Leaf frequenters. Jazz bands, homemade floats and costumes are also Krewe of Oak staples. The krewe leaves at 8 p.m. from the Maple Leaf Bar and stomps its way to other area bars including Snake 'n Jake's Christmas Club Lounge, Uptown Cajun and other Maple Street favorites before returning to the Maple Leaf for its ball with music by Mardi Gras Indians. -- Emily Hohenwarter
