K. Superstar World Grand Prix Extreme Kickboxing

comment
Mixed martial arts and ultimate fighting are bringing hard-hitting martial arts into the mainstream of competitive sports. That's spreading attention to many individual martial arts, even though at younger ages it's more about sports competition, self-defense, skill development and self-discipline. This two-day event is highlighted by the K. Superstar World Grand Prix bouts Saturday night (8:30 p.m.). Open K fighting includes kung-fu, tae kwon do, jiu-jitsu and more. The rest of the weekend features amateur-level competition (begins 9 a.m. both days) in several disciplines including ground quinna (a form of grappling), kickboxing, tai chi, light contact sparring, point sparring and weapons sports competitions. Prior to the K. Superstar event, the U.S.A Sanshou Kungfu Federation holds advanced kickboxing bouts (beginning 6 p.m. Saturday). The weekend is sponsored in part by the Shi Deru Shaolin Institute and the Sanshou Kungfu Federation (members pictured). The events will also raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospial.
