Japanese fast food at Kobe Teriyaki

comment

Recently opened in a small spot off South Carrollton Avenue, Kobe Teriyaki (7912 Earhart Blvd., 504-862-5555) serves a short menu of casual Japanese dishes. It's a counter service operation where orders come out fast and nothing on the menu breaks the $10 barrier.

That's a clue that you shouldn't come looking for Japan's prized Kobe beef here. But the teriyaki part of the restaurant's name accurately indicates its specialty. The kitchen prepares heaving rice bowls with sheets of thin-sliced beef or strips of char-broiled chicken and the savory/sweet mix of classic teriyaki.

Kobe Teriyaki is the first restaurant venture for Jetty Hui and his partners. They have cooked up a crossover as well with Japanese-style po-boys (teriyaki chicken or beef with wasabi mayonnaise) and the menu also includes vegetable tempura, salads, teriyaki chicken wings and a few sushi rolls.

While the standard fare is mildly seasoned, Hui says that the kitchen is supplied with a potent array of chile peppers and can seriously boost the heat on request. Kobe Teriyaki serves lunch and early dinner (closing at 7:30 p.m.) Monday through Saturday.
