Ida Kohlmeyer: Paintings from the Kohlmeyer Estate

comment

A New Orleans native, Ida Kohlmeyer was Louisiana's most acclaimed artist at the time of her death in 1997. The painterly exuberance of her work reflects a spirited view of the world around her as a place of joyous color, motion and vitality. Inspired by folk art, the local landscape and her garden, she was able to convey a powerful range of emotions and sensibilities through her canvases. She had been active in local art circles since the 1950s, when she studied with Hans Hoffman. In later decades, Kohlmeyer developed a unique semiotic vocabulary of shapes and symbols, which she first expressed in a grid format and later in loose flowing patterns, eventually translating that style into her acclaimed metal sculptures. As an artist and as a person, she never stopped working, and she never stopped growing. -- D. Eric Bookhardt
