With headliners including Santana, Robert Plant, Eric Clapton, Vampire Weekend, Branford Marsalis and Public Enemy, a full roster of jazz and brass bands, gospel choirs, Cajun and zydeco groups and a parade of visitors from Brazil, the kickoff weekend of the 45th annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival has something for everyone. There's the Latin rhythms of Ruben Blades and the Robert Delgado Orchestra, the blues of Niger's Bombino, the funk and soul of Chocolate Milk and the Mardi Gras Indian beats of Monk Boudreaux and the Golden Eagles. The Casa do Brasil cultural pavilion is a hub for visiting musicians, artists, parading groups and craftspeople from Brazil. Plus there's festival food, crafts, social aid and pleasure club parades and more. The following pages include Count Basin's daily recommendations, interviews with musicians, local musicians' picks, a pullout section with a map, daily schedules and festival information. Look for Count Basin's reviews of performances and highlights from the festival in coming issues and on www.bestofneworleans.com.
